Complete 5-Day SSB Interview Procedure

Conducted over five intensive days, the SSB process assesses a candidate's personality, intelligence, and leadership potential.
Here's a complete day-wise breakdown of the 5-day SSB interview procedure to help you prepare confidently.
Day 1 – Screening Test
The screening day determines who continues with the full SSB process.
1. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
- Includes verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions
- Measures basic aptitude, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills
2. Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT)
- A blurred image is shown for 30 seconds
- Candidates write a story based on the image (4 minutes)
- Followed by individual story narration and a group discussion
✅ Result:
Candidates are screened in or screened out based on their performance. Only screened-in candidates continue to the next days.
Day 2 – Psychological Tests
Conducted by a psychologist, these tests analyze your inner thoughts, personality traits, and behavior under pressure.
1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
- 12 pictures shown, including a blank one
- Candidates write a story for each image
2. Word Association Test (WAT)
- 60 words shown, one every 15 seconds
- Write the first thought that comes to your mind
3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
- 60 situational scenarios given
- Candidates write quick, spontaneous responses
4. Self-Description Test (SDT)
- Write self-opinions as perceived by parents, friends, teachers, and yourself
- Also include personal strengths and weaknesses
Day 3 & 4 – GTO Tasks (Group Testing Officer Tasks)
These two days focus on leadership, cooperation, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Major Tasks:
- Group Discussion (GD) – Informal discussion on current or social issues
- Group Planning Exercise (GPE) – Team-based problem-solving with a situational map
- Progressive Group Task (PGT) – Cross obstacles using planks and ropes
- Half Group Task (HGT) – Similar to PGT but in smaller groups
- Lecturette – 3-minute speech on one of four given topics
- Individual Obstacles – 10 physical tasks to complete in 3 minutes
- Command Task – You take charge and lead two subordinates through an obstacle
- Final Group Task (FGT) – Last group challenge assessing overall team synergy
Personal Interview (Day 2 to Day 4)
Held anytime between Day 2 and Day 4, this one-on-one interview tests your life story, clarity of thought, and Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs).
Focus Areas:
- Family, education, hobbies, and goals
- Situational and personality-based questions
- Current affairs, personal opinions, and general awareness
- Sincerity, honesty, and confidence matter the most
Day 5 – Conference Day
On the final day, all assessors (Psychologist, GTO, Interviewing Officer) come together to review each candidate.
Conference Highlights:
- You’ll be called in for 1–2 minutes
- Questions may be asked to clarify or finalize assessment
- After all candidates are reviewed, results are declared
Final Result
Based on your performance in all tests, you may be:
- Recommended – You move on to the medical examination
- Not Recommended – You can try again after improving your preparation
